Position Description
Act as lead engineer in the design and development of electromechanical surgical devices throu! gh all phases of Design Control by designing component, device and assembly fixtures, interfacing with engineers, technicians, toolmakers, and outside suppliers to assist in prototype fabrication and testing and supporting the team development effort as needed.
Position Responsibilities
Serve as lead engineer on one or more cross-functional teams responsible for bringing new products through all phases of the Design Control process
Provide updates to timelines utilizing Microsoft Project
Create part, assembly and drawing files utilizing SolidWorks and PDM Works software
Exercise expertise in mechanical drawing formats per ANSI standards
Consistently and effectively solve complex problems by applying engineering best practices
Plan and implement acute and/or chronic pre-clinical studies in support of the development
Attend clinical cases to observe surgeons performing surgery with and without Medtronic device! s
Design robust components based on common manufactur! ing processes such as injection molding, machining, and stamping
Perform tolerance analyses
Proactively anticipate issues and plan accordingly in order to complete projects within targeted objectives such as performance, time and budget
Communicate in writing on a regular basis with all cross-functional team members in a timely and concise manner
Basic Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related technical field
JOB EXPERIENCE
Minimum 7 years’ experience developing products utilizing tools described in essential duties described above
Minimum 5 years of medical device development experience with thorough understanding of Design Controls, manufacturing and quality systems
Basic understanding of electrical / electronic equipment
Prior experience leading the engineering effort for at least one medical device development project under a fo! rmal design control process
Proven track record of mechanical design excellence and engineering proficiency
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
M.S. in Engineering: Mechanical or equivalent
Experience as technical lead in a medical device setting, ability to be an excellent cross-functional team player
Previously launched products, with development experience from initial concept to commercialization
Familiarity with FEA, CFD, Mold Flow, and other common analytical/modeling techniques
Working knowledge of statistics with the ability to apply best practices such as DFSS
Skilled in working with surgeons and related personnel to develop a concept into a successful product
Familiar with FDA processes and medical device quality systems
Knowledge of injection molding, plastic part design, and polymeric materials

The employee is regularly required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
