The National Network of Public Health Institute Public Health (NNPHI) AmeriCorps Program is recruiting members for service positions that will strengthen local community resiliency and adaptation efforts to address the impacts of climate change. NNPHI Public Health AmeriCorps Program has partnered withthe Puerto Rico Public Health Trust (PRPHT) to implement local climate advocacy and community resiliency project and to support the recruitment of members into community-based organizations in Puerto Rico. The PRPHT is a program of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology & Research Trust (PRSTRT), a private non-profit organization created in 2004 to encourage and promote innovation, transfer, and commercialization of technology and the creation of jobs in the technology sector. We contribute to Puerto Rico’s public policy for science, technology, research, and development. The Trust’s mission is to invest, facilitate and build capacity to continually advance Puerto Rico's economy and its citizens’ well-being through innovation-driven enterprises, science and technology, and its industrial base. Our vision is that Puerto Rico is a global innovation hub that develops, attracts, and retains scientists, technology entrepreneurs, and enterprises to unlock world-class creativity and competitiveness. In 2017, PRSTRT was designated as a Public Health Institute, and then created the PRPHT program to fulfill this responsibility. The goal of the PRPHT is to provide the leading strategy, leadership, and innovative development for Puerto Rico’s population health initiatives. PRPHT’s vision is to achieve sustainable health equity and improve the quality of life for Puerto Rico communities.

Member Duties : The Climate Change Community Research Member aims to utilize climate change data and community observations to assess and quantify the effects of climate change on the freshwater quantity and quality in remote areas of Puerto Rico that rely on small potable water supply systems. The focus is on "building back better" in anticipation of increased risks of drought and waterborne diseases due to climate change. An understanding of the impact of climate change on pathogen survival and exposure pathways will help in local capacity-building efforts to design resilient water distribution systems and provide recommendations for minimizing pathogen exposure. The main objectives of this research are: 1) to inform best practices for community aqueducts, 2) to establish science-based indicators that communities can use to identify and quantify climate change impacts, and 3) to assess the cumulative and short-term health impacts of water pollution on households connected to small water systems.
